Playtime is more fun with a homemade puppet at hand! A spoon puppet is a great way to introduce young children to the art of puppet making. Trust me, this is a whole lot of fun for the whole family.

It was a lazy Saturday afternoon when we decided to tackle this crafty adventure together. With our craft supplies spread out on the table, we transformed a plain old spoon into a whimsical character.

As we painted on googly eyes, drew silly expressions, and glued on colorful yarn for hair, Emily’s imagination soared. We gave her puppet a name—Sir Sporks-a-Lot—and she invented stories and put on a puppet show for her stuffed animal audience. It was pure joy to witness her creativity in action.

Direction For A Spoon Puppet

This simple and affordable craft project provided hours of entertainment and allowed us to bond over a shared creative experience.  So stay tuned for our step-by-step guide on how to create your very own spoon puppets.

What You Will Need

  • Plastic spoon
  • Construction paper or foam sheets
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Yarn or pipe cleaners (optional)
  • Buttons or sequins (optional)

Step 1: Choose Your Spoon

The first step in creating your spoon puppet is to select the perfect plastic spoon. Go through your kitchen drawer or ask an adult for a spare plastic spoon. Make sure it’s clean and ready for some crafty fun!

Step 2: Design Your Puppet’s Face

Let your imagination run wild as you think about what kind of character your puppet will be. Will it be a smiling lion, a silly monster, or a friendly princess? It’s completely up to you! Grab your markers or crayons and start designing the puppet’s face on a piece of construction paper or foam sheet. Draw eyes, a nose, a mouth, and any other features you’d like to include.

Step 3: Cut Out The Face

Once you’re happy with your puppet’s face design, carefully cut it out using scissors. Be sure to follow the lines and make smooth cuts. This will be the main part of your puppet’s head.

Step 4: Attach The Face To The Spoon

Now comes the fun part! Take your puppet’s face and decide which side of the spoon you’d like it to be on. Apply glue or tape to the back of the face and firmly press it onto the spoon, making sure it sticks well. If you have googly eyes, glue them onto your puppet’s face for an extra dose of character. Get creative and let your puppet’s personality shine!

Step 5: Decorate The Puppet’s Body

Your puppet needs a body to bring it to life. Cut out some colorful pieces of construction paper or foam sheets to make clothes, wings, or any other type of body parts your puppet might need. Glue or tape these pieces onto the back of the spoon, below the puppet’s face. You can use different colors, shapes, and sizes to make your puppet truly unique!

Step 6: Add Extra Details

Let’s make your puppet even more special! Use markers or crayons to draw additional details on the body parts you attached. You can make patterns, add buttons or sequins, or even glue on bits of yarn or pipe cleaners to create hair or other textures. This is your chance to let your creativity shine and make your puppet stand out from the crowd.

Step 7: Bring Your Puppet To Life

With your spoon puppet complete, it’s time to put on a show! Slide your hand into the spoon handle, and use your fingers to move the puppet’s head and body. Make it dance, talk, or perform tricks—it’s all up to your imagination! Create fun dialogues or stories and bring your characters to life with your puppetry skills. You can even make more than one puppet and have a puppet show with your friends or family!

Step 8: Enjoy The Puppetry Fun!

Congratulations, young performers! You have successfully created your own spoon puppet and are now ready to put on a fantastic show. Make your puppet come alive with your imaginative storytelling and enjoy hours of creative entertainment.
